统计测验的效力（Power of the Test）

在四种可能的假设测验结果中，每种结果都依赖于本质的真实状态和测验结论（Every hypothesis test results in one of four possible outcomes depending on the true state of nature and the outcome of the test）,如下表所示:

当无效假设为真而被否定时发生I类错误Type I errors occur when the null hypothesis is rejected even though it is true）,当无效假设为假而不否定时发生第II类错误（Type II errors occur when the null hypothesis is not rejected when it is false）。根据每类错误的风险（Depending on the risks associated with each type of error）,我们能最小化类型I或类型II的错误（then either Type I or Type II errors can be minimized）。例如,如果假设是动物没某种疾病而动物真的是没这种病（if the hypothesis is that an animal does not have a disease and the animal does not have the disease）,那么否决假设（I类错误）会导致动物被按这种病治疗（then rejection of the hypothesis (Type I error) results in the animal being treated for the disease）。这可能很费钱并且还可能要做外科手术（This could be very costly and might involve surgery）,或者成本很小而对动物没伤害（or the treatment could be minimal in cost and without harmful effects on the animal）。另一方面（On the other hand）,如果动物真有该病而没否决假设（if the animal really does have the disease and the hypothesis is not rejected）（II类错误）(Type II error),那么动物也许不被治疗（then the animal would not be treated）。不治疗的代价也许是动物死亡（The cost of no treatment might be death of the animal）。

测验的效力是1减去II类错误的概率（The Power of the Test is 1 minus the probability of a Type II error）。如果II类错误能够导致死亡损失或沉重的财政损失（If a Type II error results in death loss or heavy financial loss）,那么研究人员就该使用很高的测验效力（then the researcher should use a very high Power of the Test）。在临床研究中测验效力是很重要的（The Power of the Test is important in clinical studies），但是对动物繁育研究的田间数据来说并不那么严格（but not as critical in animal breeding research on field data）
