Sow removal rate for any given period is defined by the sum of culling rate and death loss. In turn, culling rate can be arbitrarily divided into 

(1) voluntary, due to old age and/or low performance; and 

(2) involuntary, as in long wean to service interval, reproductive failure, lameness, and poor body condition.
